Riverside City College (RCC) has been officially designated a Black-Serving Institution (BSI) by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, marking a significant milestone in the college’s ongoing commitment to equity, access, and student success for Black and African American students.

The BSI designation recognizes colleges where at least 10 percent of the student population identifies as Black or African American and where institutions demonstrate sustained, intentional efforts to advance Black student achievement, belonging, and completion. RCC’s designation reflects years of campus-wide work centered on culturally responsive education, student support services, and inclusive academic pathways.

“This designation affirms the deep commitment of our campus community to serving Black students with intention, care, and accountability,” said Eric Bishop, Interim President of Riverside City College. “Being recognized as a Black-Serving Institution is both an honor and a call to action—one that reinforces our responsibility to continue investing in programs, practices, and partnerships that support student success.”

As a Black-Serving Institution, RCC will gain access to additional state resources aimed at strengthening initiatives that support Black students. These resources will enhance existing programs such as Umoja, culturally responsive counseling and mentoring, curriculum development, and community-engaged learning opportunities.
