Viewpoints Staffer Ready to Take On Additional Duties

Viewpoints is already celebrating a milestone by a student journalist as the fall semester gets underway. The campus paper’s ace investigative reporter Aaron Friesen has been tapped as a new CalMatters College Journalism Network Fellow.

Over the nine-month fellowship, Friesen will remain enrolled at RCC. In this competitively earned position, he joins a team of reporters to write impactful stories about California higher education for CalMatters, a nonprofit news organization that works with various media partners and covers state politics and policies. The nine-month fellowship group will also receive excellent training.

The upcoming 2026-27 academic year promises to be a banner year for Viewpoints, Riverside City College’s award-winning, student-run multimedia newspaper. It follows a busy spring that saw record enrollment in both the beginning (JOU-20) and advanced (JOU-52) journalism courses.

Many of the paper’s top editors and staffers have graduated and are happily heading to campuses up and down the state to join the student newspapers there, including Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State San Bernardino and San Francisco State University.

Your student news team is being led by new Editor-in-Chief Chelsea Sugimura and Managing Editor Marissa Lievanos. The current view crew members are ready to cover and report on RCC and districtwide news, events and information this upcoming academic year. And, the paper is always looking for new recruits.
