Riverside City College (RCC) continues to advance its commitment to student success and belonging by providing transformative learning opportunities beyond the classroom. On April 3, 2026, twelve RCC students attended the 8th Annual Men of Color Action Network (MOCAN) Conference, accompanied by Counseling Faculty member Kenneth Samson and colleague Luis Molina.

Although new to RCC, having joined the college in February, Kenneth Samson was scheduled to serve as a panelist at the conference. Recognizing the value of the experience, he ensured RCC students could also participate. Throughout the day, students engaged in workshops and discussions focused on the experiences of men of color in higher education, leadership development, career and transfer pathways, and access to critical resources such as scholarships. Students also had the opportunity to connect with peers from community colleges and four-year universities, expanding their networks and sense of community. Each participating student received a $100 stipend to support their attendance.

“This experience reflects the kind of intentional, student-centered opportunities we strive to create at RCC,” said Kenneth Samson, Counseling Faculty member. “Our students not only gained valuable knowledge and resources, but also found space to reflect, connect, and grow as leaders in their educational journeys.”

“Opportunities like the MOCAN Conference are powerful because they create space for our students to be seen, heard, and supported,” said Luis Molina, Project Manager STEM grants. “Watching our students engage, build connections, and leave with a renewed sense of purpose reinforces the importance of investing in experiences that affirm their identity and expand their vision for what’s possible.”

Student feedback from the conference underscored its impact. One student described the experience as “life changing,” while another shared that hearing a keynote speaker’s testimony about overcoming personal challenges was especially meaningful. Students also highlighted the opportunity to express vulnerability, build community, and gain practical knowledge about scholarships and financial support. Many noted that the conference helped them find renewed motivation to continue their education and strengthened their commitment to becoming role models in their communities.

RCC remains dedicated to creating pathways that empower students to thrive academically, professionally, and personally. Opportunities like the MOCAN Conference exemplify the college’s ongoing efforts to foster leadership, connection, and equity-centered support for all students.
