From RCC to Outstanding Graduate: Marilyn Monroy Returns as Keynote Speaker to Inspire the Next Generation

Riverside City College (RCC) is proud to welcome back distinguished alumna Marilyn Monroy as the keynote speaker for the EOPS/CARE/NextUp Graduation Celebration on June 3, 2025. Monroy, a former foster youth and first-generation college graduate, embodies the transformational impact of RCC’s student support programs.
While attending RCC from 2014 to 2020, Monroy was deeply involved in Guardian Scholars, EOPS/NextUp, and La Casa—programs that provided her with the foundation to thrive academically and personally. She graduated with great distinction, earning five associate degrees in areas including History, Sociology, and Communications. Inspired by the counselors who guided her, Monroy shifted her path from criminal justice to counseling, realizing her passion for supporting others.
“Once an EOPS, always an EOPS,” she shared. “I always talk about how much this program has helped me out.”
After RCC, Monroy transferred to Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and recently completed her Master of Science in School and Professional Counseling. This May, she was named one of the Outstanding Graduate Students by CSUSB’s James R. Watson & Judy Rodriguez Watson College of Education.
Her inspiring story has been featured in CSUSB's news outlets:

Monroy now dedicates her career to counseling students from historically underserved backgrounds—just as she once was. Her return as keynote speaker is not only a full-circle moment, but a testament to the power of belonging, mentorship, and perseverance.
The EOPS/CARE/NextUp celebration honors students who have overcome significant barriers to reach graduation. Marilyn Monroy’s presence and message will serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder that with support and determination, anything is possible.
