When Brianna Brent walked onto the Riverside City College (RCC) campus, she wasn’t entirely sure where her path would lead. What she did know—thanks to her mother’s encouragement—was that higher education would give her options, even if she wasn’t ready to commit to a specific career.

Her journey wasn’t a straight line. “I followed my mom’s advice to take one class at a time so school didn’t feel like a chore,” Brianna recalled. “It took me longer to graduate, but it allowed me to explore different subjects and discover what I really enjoyed.” That curiosity led her to earn not one, but three associate degrees from RCC—in Communications, Humanities Philosophy and Art, and Social and Behavioral Studies.

One course in particular, an interpersonal communications class, sparked her passion for the field. “It opened my eyes to how communication shapes everything—from personal relationships to cultural traditions to how organizations connect with people,” she said. That interest carried her to California State University, San Bernardino, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Communications and Public Relations, and later to Southern New Hampshire University, where she completed her master’s degree in Communications with an emphasis in New Media and Marketing.

Today, Brianna is a Senior Corporate Marketing Communications professional for Paramount Residential Mortgage Group, where she creates and executes company-wide communication strategies for more than 2,000 employees. Her work includes internal newsletters, press releases, and engagement initiatives—skills she first began honing during an internship at the same company while still in college. “I’ve always loved to write,” she said. “That internship turned into a full-time job, and I’ve been growing here ever since.”

Brianna credits RCC with giving her both the academic foundation and the confidence to succeed in her career. Supportive instructors, real-world assignments, and opportunities to network with classmates all played a role. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, connect with your peers, and use every resource available—from the Writing Center to career fairs,” she advised current students. “The relationships you build can open doors years later.”

Her advice to those hesitant about starting college is simple: “Just take one class. You might find that one subject that changes everything for you—like communications did for me.”

From a student unsure of her direction to a communications leader shaping organizational culture, Brianna Brent’s story is proof that persistence, curiosity, and connection can turn an uncertain beginning into a career with purpose.
