PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Nursing
As you know, the key to combating COVID-19 is testing. RCC’s RN and VN students are contributing to this effort working with the Riverside County Public Health Department at three COVID-19 testing sites.

Model United Nations
Even Coronavirus couldn’t stop the RCCD Model United Nations Team from their commitment to excellence. Although the team wasn’t able to participate in the annual International Model United Nations conference, the team submitted their entry online. As a result, the team won the highest award in Position Papers in the General Assembly Committee One and the Human Rights Council, representing Eritrea.

Jazz and Guitar EnsemblesAs we all practice “safer at home” practices, the College’s Music students from both the Jazz and Guitar Ensembles produced musical recordings from home.
The Jazz Ensemble recorded “Beyond the 2nd Line” and Guitar Ensemble students recorded "Air" by Johan Helmich Roman while practicing social distancing.

The Jazz musicians performed a piece together while each individual part of the guitar performance was recorded in the privacy of students' homes and mixed by another student. Special recognition to Music Assistant Professor Jennifer Amaya for teaching the guitar students valuable recording engineering skills.

Chamber Singers
The RCC Chamber Singers was one of 15 schools selected from hundreds of applicants to perform at the 2020 American Choral Directors Association Western Division Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. Professor John Byun commissioned composer and friend, Jake Runestad, to write a song titled “Elegy” for this occasion.  The Chamber Singers’ performance was released last week and in the first 15 minutes, it received over a thousand views.

Student Success
Eric Simmons works full time as a chef and was looking for a career change. He learned about the RCC Welding program and in 2018 enrolled. Just a few months from earning his certificate, Eric began applying for welding jobs. Simmons is now employed at a structural steel shop in Riverside. He said the training at RCC prepared him for the workplace and finds it easy to adapt that information into his new learning environment on the job.

Career & Transfer Center
The college’s Career and Transfer Center staff created an informational video highlighting services offered remotely. The team shares great information about career opportunities and partnerships with four-year colleges and universities.

Early in the spring semester, 61 biology students planted radishes, beets, and beans in the Outdoor Plant Laboratory on campus. Faculty has been caring for them and reported that they are growing rapidly and will be picked and included in the grab and go bags provided to students next week.
