Rubidoux Early College High School (RECHS)
Rubidoux Early College High School is a small school, grades 9-12, within a large comprehensive high school, Rubidoux High School. It was established in fall 2006 by the Jurupa Unified School District and Riverside Community College District. Early college high school students are able to earn a high school diploma and college credit at the same time. College credit can include units toward completion of a certificate program, an Associate's degree or up two years of transferable credit toward a Bachelor's degree.
To create a small high school that includes:
- A student-centered culture in which students have a voice and play a role in deciding what path they will take in their college studies
- A supportive environment that encourages underrepresented groups and first-generation students to attend and succeed in college
- A rigorous program that specializes in preparing students for college and the world of work through innovative teaching and learning strategies
- A career-related internship through a partnership of high school, college, local businesses and Riverside County Office of Education, Regional Occupational Program
- Professional learning communities that emphasize a collaborative approach among high school and college teachers and students
The Multiple Pathways approach offers students the opportunity to choose from a variety of programs that offer academic rigor and career preparation that students need to move ahead in learning and job training while becoming strong, active, and participating members of their community.
Using small learning communities, teachers and students integrate academic and career-and-technical education classes which give students an educational experience that connects to the world of work. These students enroll in both high school courses and college courses provided by Rubidoux High School and Riverside City College and follow a pathway of their choice.
Currently, pathways in the following areas have been developed: Public Safety, Health, and Liberal Arts. Students that select these pathways may pursue careers in the following areas: police officer, firefighter, probation officer, nursing, dental assistant, physician assistant, medical assistant, paramedic, emergency medical technician, criminal justice, and early childhood education. As part of each Pathway, students also participate in a career preparations course that includes an internship relevant to the students' academic and personal interests.
