Why is Riverside City College a great musical destination?
The mission of the Performing Arts Department at Riverside City College is to provide students the means to accomplish their goals in the performing arts with an educational program that prepares them to contribute as artists, educators, audience, and supporters of the arts. At the heart of the department are outstanding arts experiences, superior teaching, and access to valuable aesthetic learning in dance, music, and theater.
RCC offers a comprehensive musical and academic program for its music students, including:
Great Performing Ensembles:
From our three award-winning Jazz Ensembles, Wind Ensemble, world-famous Marching Band, Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Singers, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Master Chorale, Guitar Ensemble, and Piano Chamber Ensemble. There are outstanding musical experiences available for serious music students.
RCC’s faculty are well respected and active in their fields. They can be found in concerts as performers and conductors throughout Southern California and beyond.
A Comprehensive Program in Music Theory and Music Literature :
Our theory program is an intensive and complete course of study in Fundamentals and in Music Theory I, II, and III, which prepares RCC students to successfully transfer to the university setting and do well on their transfer placement exams in music theory, ear training, sight-singing, and keyboard skills. RCC’s music literature and “Great Composers” classes satisfy the lower division music literature and/or history requirements for transfer institutions. These courses in theory and literature/history prepare our music majors to be highly competitive in attaining junior placement as a music major when they transfer.
RCC students have opportunities to perform well-known music, work with acclaimed guest artists, and travel to festivals and cultural events throughout the world. Students in the Marching Band perform and are televised worldwide in the most prestigious parades and are known as “Hollywood’s Band” for their many appearances in motion pictures. RCC students also create and record music in the state-of-the-art MIDI/Digital Audio Lab and study keyboard proficiency skills in the Kawai Piano Lab. The bands and the orchestra rehearse in the new Stover Music Hall and perform in Landis Auditorium and the new Digital Library Auditorium.
