Phyllis Rowe started college at the University
of Illinois as a mathematics major. In her sophomore year, a church program
on missionary work in South America stimulated her interest in healthcare,
and the next fall, she was enrolled in the U of I College of Nursing. Upon
graduation with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, she started work
as a staff nurse in a large state mental health facility. Soon she was assigned
to work in the Staff Development Department and was hooked on teaching. Meanwhile,
she worked part time on weekends as a staff nurse at a local hospital on
the maternity and mental health units.
When her husband was accepted for graduate studies at the University of California,
Riverside, they happily moved their meager possessions and their cat across
the country. Her interview at Riverside Community College (RCC) was scheduled
the day after they arrived and she has been teaching at RCC ever since. In
the intervening years, she has earned a permanent teaching credential, as well
as a Master of Science Degree in Nursing with a specialization as an Adult
Nurse Practitioner. In May 2007 she graduated from the Doctorate of Nursing Program at Case Western Reserve University Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing.
Dr. Rowe states her life has been enriched immeasurably through her association
with RCC and the nursing profession. She is honored to share in the achievement
of our students' goals and feels grateful every day that her life has been
blessed with this interesting and challenging career.
